Can Giving Up Actually Be an Option?
I’ve heard a lot of people saying that giving up should never be an option, and I agree with that partially. It’s not that I don’t want to try hard in my life nor give up right away just after a few attempts. Instead, it’s that sometimes, it can be really tiring and uses up a lot of mental efforts to keep up with something that you can barely achieve even though you’re doing all your best to accomplish it.
Just to give you an example, I’m terribly weak in Mathematics. I have tried all I could to excel in Math, and even after several practices and taking new classes for this subject, I still felt like my Math skills weren’t good enough. Although I could see some improvements in my skills and knowledge, I couldn’t reach the expectations I set on myself. I really got frustrated after this and even told to myself that I was just so dumb not to be able to master in Math. To overcome my frustration and disappointment which I obtained due to this case, I came up with a rule for myself: Try your best but let go when you end up not achieving what you want (even after various tries).
I understand that this rule can’t be applied in all cases. But in the cases like mine, I believe that (at least for myself) I can apply this rule to save myself from those negative thoughts and feelings. Moreover, this doesn’t mean that you have to give up completely on everything! For example, even though I no longer force myself to attempt to be excellent in Math, I still study Math as best as I can.
And another thing is that despite of not being able to expertise in Math, I can still stand out in other subjects. So do you! Even if you may not be good at something, there’re many other things out there that you can be the best at! Rather than spending all your time and effort in something in which you don’t achieve success as much as you try, what if you explore something else that matches your talent, then give it a try?
You may disagree with what was said in this piece of writing, but I just want to advise you that you shouldn’t put pressures on yourself to keep trying to achieve something, just because of the thoughts of “I should never give up!”. Giving up is, of course, not always a good option, but in some cases, giving up can be a healthier option than others for the sake of both your physical and mental well-being.
